Hazel was born on July 10th, 1996 in Cynthiana, Kentucky. She is the daughter of Rick and Lori Grimes and is the older sister to Carl by 6 years and Judith by 16 years. She was raised in a small neighborhood with her family. Before the apocalypse started she had a boyfriend called matthew who unfortunately passed away from being bitten on the shoulder the day her and her family fled from their home town to find somewhere safe. The death of her first boyfriend was something that troubled her a lot, mainly due to the fact she didn't get the chance to say goodbye aswell as the suspected death of her father Rick.Hazel was a rebellious teenager since she constantly felt looked over and ignored by her parents, She often times felt neglected, she was always listening to her parents bicker back and forth and focusing their attention on the young boy, Hazel’s little brother Carl. Hazel always tried her best to protect Carl from their parents the best she could. Hazel attended Paul r williams high school – she was a top student and the top of her classes, always getting the best grades however that soon changed when she started to rebel against her father and mother to try and gain their attention. She started to find company within Carter Smith, a girl in a higher grade than her. The two often partied together and Carter gave Hazel that adrenaline rush she craved.Hazel was the apple of ricks eye and she was a definite father's little girl growing up – her relationship with Lori wasn't the best as the two would constantly clash. Rick is someone Hazel goes to whenever she was upset or needed a shoulder to cry on. Even though she was a fairly rebellious teenager she still respected her parents and only acted out to try and get some of their attention. Hazel's relationship with Lori started to get better as the apocalypse started, but was never perfect. Due to Lori grieving Rick as everybody assumed he was dead Hazel was looked over once again and had to care for Carl whenever loris grief caused her to be unable to do so. She was also made aware of her mother's affair with Shane as she caught them together one night, her and her mothers relationship becomes even more strained from that moment and the affair is something Hazel is deeply ashamed of her mother for.She is a fiery young woman who will do whatever it takes to keep her friends and family safe, even if that means giving her own life up to the enemies or the walkers. She found it hard when the apocalypse first started as she was just a naive teenager. The grief from her deceased lover troubled her deeply but she kept it hidden, not wanting to be a burden.When Rick returns to the group Hazel is overjoyed, it was the happiest moment of her life, although the happiness didn't last very long when the quarry became overwhelmed with walkers, meaning the group had to flee and find sanctuary else where.Hazel is with her brother Carl, Shane and Rick when Carl is shot and they are taken to the Greene farm to get Carl the medical treatment he needs in order to survive, Hazel is heartbroken, Carl is Hazel's world and she couldn't bare to think about a world without him in it. Whilst staying with the Greene family Hazel becomes friends with both Beth and Maggie. Lori and Hazel's relationship becomes worse at this stage as she is still harboring the secret of the affair between her mother and Shane. With Rick and Lori caring for Carl her wellbeing is looked over once again – but it is something Hazel is used to.The prison is a traumatic time for Hazel, just as her and loris relationship begins to get better her mother unfortunately dies whilst giving birth to her baby sister Judith. Due to ricks time being taken up by grieving Lori she takes on a motherly role for both Judith and Carl since her father wasn't well enough to do so. From the moment Lori dies Hazel promises to protect her siblings with her life, they mean the world to her. When the prison falls she goes with daryl, carter and beth, being completely separated from her father and her siblings. After Beth is abducted both Hazel and daryl do their best to find her – eventually they give up once they come across the claimers, once the claimers are killed they make their way to terminus where they are reunited with the rest of the group. The eventual death of her close friend Beth troubles Hazel greatly and she feels somewhat responsible for the woman's death.When the group finally stumble across alexandria Hazel finally feels like the group will be safe and she settles down in the community with her family. Although she still felt like it could be too good to be true as all their other safe havens had gotten destroyed. Hazel finds her happiness again whilst she is in alexandria and herself and Carter build a family together. They settle down in one of the homes and Hazel finally begins to heal from the grief she had pushed away. Her and Carter get married too and Hazel finds peace once she had dealt with the pain she had been holding onto.However later on when her brother carl died Hazel's downfall began,  she became the quiet girl once again, becoming careless with her own life. the loss of her brother and then when rick goes missing it breaks Hazel, in fact both of those events and the endless amounts of built up emotion and grief played a significant part in why she ran away from Alexandria for three years. But she's strong. One of the strongest of the group, always fighting back against the odds. Even though she struggles with her substance abuse / addiction whilst fighting to stay alive in a world full of zombies, hazel will never give up. Whilst being away from alexandria Hazel falls into the grips of a group that use her for their own benefit, due to her being vulnerable they used her to kill the walkers and other survivors for them. She hated herself for being with the group but she physically couldn't leave due to them stopping her each time, she was used and abused by the group and that trauma she developed from the time spent with the group is hard for her to get over. Due to her deep desire to go back home to her family no matter the cost the group deemed her "dangerous" and a "liability" as she had put their lives in danger multiple times trying to escape, they tied her to a chair in an abandoned store and forced a walker to bite her right arm. They didnt want her to die they just wanted her to suffer. Due to the bite Hazel ended up amputating her right arm — this is something Hazel is deeply insecure about and when she returns to alexandria its something she tries her best to hide along with the fact she developed a drug addiction in the aftermath of her amputation. Due to her amputation she also suffers from phantom limb pain which is something she finds difficult to deal with. Hazel's return to alexandria is the most difficult thing she had ever done, she returns to Alexandria on deaths door and severely sick due to a infection she developed from amputating her arm – she also returns pregnant as a result of an assault by a member of the group that held her hostage but unfortunately suffers from a miscarriage from the strain on her sick body. Her return was also something she dreaded as she had to come face to face to her daughter and her wife after leaving them for 3 years ( even though that wasn't her fault ) she still felt severely guilty because of it.When the Whisperers show up Her and Carter's daughter Emberly is piked and the death devastated them both – Hazel tried her best to keep it together as the two had other children, she found it hard to cope with the pain of losing her oldest child and she was also haunted by the guilt of missing out on three years of emberlys life when she left alexandria. The death is something neither of them get over but something they live with.When the commonwealth takes place Hazel and her children along with Carter are part of the group that end up going to the commonwealth as they don't have a choice but to do so.
Even though she had to grow up too fast in a world full of danger and death, Hazel is a force to be reckoned With, someone you don't want to get on the bad side of. The Grimes family are powerful and will do everything and anything in their power to protect the ones they love.Hazel's signature weapon is her gun mount and her butterfly knife that was given to her by her father. she is always at the front of her group, protecting the others from the danger. Family and friends mean the world to her and their safety comes above everything. Even her own.
